🏖️ FIRST STOP: KUTA BEACH
Kuta is one of Bali’s best-known beach destinations, famous for its long sandy beach, surf schools, spectacular sunsets and lively atmosphere. It’s also a great place for beginners to try surfing, thanks to its sandy-bottom beach breaks and plenty of instructors ready to help you catch your first wave.
The town is close to Bali’s international airport, making it an easy starting point for exploring the island. You’ll find beachside cafés, local Indonesian warungs, budget-friendly accommodation, shopping, nightlife and plenty of opportunities to watch the sun disappear into the Indian Ocean.
🏄♂️ SO, NATURALLY, I DECIDED TO LEARN TO SURF.
My surf instructor in Bali said, “You’ll need physical therapy for a year.”
But God, you looked beautiful right before that wave snapped your spine. 💔😂
I’m beginning to suspect retirement was supposed to be relaxing.

Surfing for beginners
Kuta is a classic place to learn, with sandy-bottom waves and surf schools along the beach. Conditions vary, and rip currents can occur, so follow your instructor and swim only in designated safe areas.
Sunsets and beach life
The beach faces west, making sunset a highlight. Kuta also has cafés, shopping, food stalls and a lively nightlife scene.
Food and getting around
Try local warungs for Indonesian favourites such as nasi goreng and mie goreng. Central Kuta is walkable, while Grab, Gojek and taxis can help with longer trips. Traffic can be heavy, so allow extra time.
